GeoGuessr is coming to Steam after years in your browser

GeoGuessr, the popular browser-based geography game that launched in 2013, is finally making its way to PC with a new Steam listing. Despite being 12 years old, the game will enter Early Access when it debuts sometime in April 2025. In GeoGuessr, players are dropped into a random Google Street View location and must determine their coordinates. Over the years, the game has built a surprising competitive esports scene, which the Steam edition aims to expand with a focus on ranked play and competitive modes. According to the Steam listing, the game will stay in Early Access for “at least six months” as developers introduce “new game modes, maps, and competitive features.” At launch, it will support ranked Solo Duels and unranked Team Duels, with cross-play available between the Steam and browser versions. Explore the Hidden Gems of Oman in GeoGuessr!

Oman is finally here! It lets players experience the rugged mountains, pristine coastlines, and rich cultural landmarks of this beautiful Middle Eastern country. Whether you're a seasoned GeoGuessr player or new to the game, Oman promises to provide unique and fascinating challenges!

A Brief Guide to Playing the Oman Map

Spotting Clues in Oman’s Landscape

To navigate Oman successfully, it’s essential to recognize some local landmarks, cultural signs, and regional characteristics that are unique to the country. Here are some tips to help you find your way:

  1. License Plates
Look closely at the vehicles around you. In Oman, license plates are either yellow for private vehicles or red for commercial vehicles. This small detail can help you distinguish between personal and business areas, potentially hinting at larger cities versus smaller towns.

  2. Speed Cameras and Bumps
Oman is known for its frequent speed cameras on main roads and speed bumps on regional and residential streets. If you’re seeing a speed camera every few kilometers, it’s likely you’re on a main road.

  3. Camels on the Road
Yes, it’s true—camels roam freely in Oman, especially in the Salalah region in the south. If you come across camels or signs warning of them, you’re likely in a rural area, far from the urban centers like Muscat.

  4. Traditional Attire
Omani men often wear a traditional hat called a Kumar instead of the ghutra, which is common in Qatar and the UAE. Spotting locals wearing a Kumar can be a helpful hint that you’re still in Oman and not in a neighboring country.

  5. Cafés and Karak Culture
Coffee is big in Oman! Along with coffee shops, you’ll find stands or small shops serving Karak tea (a spiced milk tea that’s a local favorite). A fun tip: locals may sometimes honk as they drive by these tea stalls—an easy clue that you’re in a populated area.

Oman’s Most Scenic Regions to Keep an Eye On

Muscat
As the capital city, Muscat offers a unique blend of modern and traditional architecture. Look for white-washed buildings, blue-domed mosques, and markets (souks) with vibrant shops.

Salalah
Known for its lush landscapes during the Khareef (monsoon) season, Salalah stands out from Oman’s arid desert regions. Here, you might spot green valleys, waterfalls, and camels on winding roads.

Jebel Shams
Dubbed the "Grand Canyon of Oman," this mountainous region has steep cliffs and incredible views. If you’re up high with a dramatic landscape stretching before you, Jebel Shams is a good guess.

The Coastal Areas
Oman has some stunning coastal areas with turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs. These areas are more remote, so if you’re seeing the open sea and rocky cliffs, you’re likely on Oman’s coast.
